For every pet
- Food and water bowls
- A supply of the food your pet is already eating
- Bed or crate pad
- Collar with an ID tag (current phone number)
- Safe toys for play and enrichment
- Grooming basics (brush, nail clippers)
- Cleaning supplies and an enzymatic cleaner for accidents
For dogs
- Leash and, ideally, a well-fitted harness
- Waste bags
- Crate sized for the adult dog (with divider for a puppy)
- Chew toys appropriate for the age
- Puppy pads (if you plan to use them)
For cats
- Litter box (one per cat plus one extra) and litter
- Scratching post or pad
- Carrier for vet visits
- A quiet hiding spot or covered bed
Before arrival
- Pet-proof the home (cords, toxic plants, medications, small objects)
- Choose and book a first veterinary visit
- Confirm your building or landlord allows your pet
- Register the microchip with your current details
