Where Dogs Are Not Allowed on Cape Cod: The Complete Verified List
Beaches get the attention, and they are only part of it. Playgrounds are closed at any time, only two Seashore walking trails are open, and leaving the dog in the car is banned outright in three towns.

Beaches get all the attention, and they are only part of it. Cape Cod's dog exclusions also cover playgrounds, walking trails, bike trails, horse trails, freshwater ponds, park trams, beach parking lots, unattended vehicles and ferry food service areas.
This guide collects every exclusion we could verify from a source, organised by the kind of place rather than by the town, because that is how you actually encounter them.
Playgrounds: year round, no season, no exception
Eastham's beach regulations, reproduced in the Eastham dog rules PDF, state it without qualification:
"No animals or pets will be permitted in playground areas at any time."
"At any time" is the whole rule. No summer window, no early morning carve-out, no leash condition that makes it acceptable. Of every exclusion in this guide, this is the one with the fewest edges to argue about.
Beaches: eight calendars, and we have a separate guide for them
The beach exclusions are extensive enough that our Cape Cod dog beach calendar covers them in a dedicated table. The short version, with sources:
- Dennis: no dogs on any public beach or parking area, Friday before Memorial Day through Labor Day, per its leash law page
- Brewster: May 15 to September 15 on one page, May 1 to October 1 on another, per its dog licence page and beach policies
- Eastham: no dog on any public bathing beach June 15 through Labor Day, by bylaw
- Sandwich: no dogs on any town-owned saltwater beach April 1 to September 15, per its animal control page
- Falmouth: no animals on the beach May 1 to October 1, per its beach regulations
- Truro: all animals prohibited between 9 in the morning and 6 in the evening, third Saturday in June through Labor Day, per its beach regulations
- Orleans: five separate windows across its own beaches, per the town's Dogs on the Beaches memo
Beach parking lots and unattended vehicles
This is the one that catches people who thought they had complied by leaving the dog in the car.
Falmouth names it explicitly. Verbatim from its beach regulations:
"Animals are NOT permitted on the beach or in beach parking lots from May 1 to October 1. This includes leaving pets in parked vehicles. Service dogs required because of a disability are permitted."
Brewster names it too, and defines the geography around it. Verbatim from its beach and landing policies:
"Per Board of Health Regulation, Animals and/or pets are not permitted on public beach areas or in unattended vehicles from May 1 to October 1."
"Public Beach area includes the beach, the parking lot, and the abutting Town dunes and flats. Yellow posts identify limits of Town property."
The yellow posts are the practical tip in this whole guide. In Brewster they mark where the town's authority ends, which means they also mark where the exclusion ends.
Eastham reaches into the vehicle as well. Its beach rules, verbatim: "No animals or pets will be permitted on the beaches, in the parking areas, or in vehicles in the parking areas at any time during the period of June 15th through Labor Day."
Dennis bans dogs from parking areas alongside beaches, verbatim: "dogs will not be allowed on any Dennis Public Beaches or Parking Areas".
And the rail trail rules require a leash in parking areas even where dogs are otherwise permitted, per the Massachusetts DCR rules reproduced in Eastham's document: "Dogs must be on-leash in all parking areas."
Four towns write the car and the lot into the rule itself. Here is how each one words the reach of its ban.
| Town | Ban reaches | Window |
|---|---|---|
| Falmouth | Beach, parking lots, pets in parked vehicles | May 1 to October 1 |
| Brewster | Public beach areas, unattended vehicles | May 1 to October 1 |
| Eastham | Beaches, parking areas, vehicles in those areas | June 15 through Labor Day |
| Dennis | Public beaches, parking areas | Friday before Memorial Day to Labor Day |
Beyond the legal position, a dog in a parked car on the Cape in July is a safety problem. Eastham's dog rules packet includes a form titled "Emergency Procedure of Confinement of Animal in a Motor Vehicle", and Wellfleet publishes a document titled "Dogs in Hot Cars" alongside its beaches page. Our summer heat safety for pets guide covers why.
Walking trails inside the National Seashore
The federal park's position is strict, and it is the opposite of what most people expect from a national park. Verbatim from the Seashore pets page, under where pets are not permitted:
"All walking trails except for Doane and Pilgrim Spring; check signs and at visitor centers for exceptions;"
Two open trails in the entire park. Doane Trail in Eastham and Pilgrim Spring Trail in Truro. Everything else on foot is closed to pets.
The fire roads are the exception worth knowing, and they are permitted, verbatim: "All fire roads within Cape Cod National Seashore;". Our dogs at Cape Cod National Seashore guide covers the whole federal picture.
Bike trails, seasonally
Two of the park's three named bike trails close to pets for six months. Verbatim:
"Nauset and Province Lands bike trails, May 1-October 31;"
And the permitted side of that, verbatim: "Head of the Meadow Bicycle Trail year round and Province Lands and Nauset bike trails, November 1-April 30;"
So Head of the Meadow is the year round bike trail option, and the other two flip with the season.
Freshwater ponds, seasonally, and the reason is not only shorebirds
The Seashore closes its ponds to pets across the summer. Verbatim:
"Fresh water ponds within Cape Cod National Seashore (beaches and water), May 15-October 15;"
And opens them the rest of the year, verbatim: "Freshwater ponds within Cape Cod National Seashore (beaches and water), October 16-May 14;"
There is a separate health reason to stay out of warm still fresh water, and Sandwich publishes it. Verbatim from its beaches page:
"Beach goers and dog walkers should be aware that this Blue Green Algae can occur as water temperatures warm, in early summer."
"ingestion of Cyanobacteria can cause serious illness for you and your pet."
The same page notes the algae "may be visible in one area of a pond while another is not affected", so a clear looking edge is not evidence of a safe pond. That warning happens to line up almost exactly with the park's closure window.
Shorebird closures: posted, moving, and absolute
These are areas rather than facilities, and they can appear anywhere along the Outer Cape shoreline. Verbatim from the Seashore:
"Areas where certain shorebirds nest, especially the piping plover, a threatened species under the Endangered Species Act."
"Walking pets in these areas is prohibited 24/7."
The five annual closures, in effect April 1 through October 15, are at Coast Guard Beach in Eastham, Nauset Marsh in Eastham, Jeremy Point at Great Island in Wellfleet, Hatches Harbor in Provincetown, and Herring Cove in Provincetown.
Beyond those, variable closures appear through the season, and the park says its own website cannot keep up:
"Pet closures are subject to change daily. Pay attention to pet signage at beach entrances for shorebird closures. Signs and active pet closures on the beach take precedence over information on the website."
Lifeguard-protected beaches, with a transit right
This exclusion has an exception built in, and the exception has a condition. Verbatim:
"During the summer, pets are not permitted on lifeguard-protected beaches. However, leashed pets are permitted to pass through lifeguard protected areas to reach areas where they may otherwise be allowed. If there are shorebird closures on or beyond lifeguard-protected beaches, pets are not allowed to walk through."
You may walk through to somewhere legal. You may not walk through to somewhere closed. So the transit right depends on your destination still being open, which is another reason the entrance sign governs.
Horse trails and park trams
Two short federal exclusions, verbatim:
"West and Sunset horse trails in the Province Lands;" "Cape Cod National Seashore trams; working service animals excepted."
The tram exclusion carries the only working animal exception in the federal list, which is worth noting if you use one.
Ferry food service areas and seating
Pets are welcome on the Steamship Authority ferries, with three specific exclusions. Verbatim from its visitor FAQs:
"Pets are welcome on board our ferries. Your pets are carried free of charge, but they must be accompanied by the passenger who is responsible for their care and conduct during the passage. Owners are required to clean up after their pets. All pets must be kept on a leash or in a container, and must be under the control of the passenger at all times. No pets (except for service assistance animals) are allowed in any food service area. No pets are allowed on any passenger seat or table."
No food service area, no passenger seat, no table. The seat rule catches people out on a crowded summer sailing, because a small dog on a lap is fine and a small dog on the seat beside you is not. Our visiting Cape Cod with a dog guide covers the rest of the ferry practicalities.
Dog parks, where the dog itself is excluded
Two Cape dog parks exclude certain dogs at the gate rather than excluding dogs from a place. Pilgrim Bark Park in Provincetown requires, verbatim from its rules page:
"Must be spayed or neutered" "Must be at least four months old" "Must be licensed, vaccinated, and wear tags at all times" "Must not be sick or suffering with parasites"
And it excludes other species entirely, verbatim: "May not bring animals other than dogs into the park".
An intact dog that the town will happily license for $20 cannot enter the town's dog park. Our Cape Cod off-leash areas guide covers both Cape dog parks in full, including the Brewster park's monthly maintenance closure.
Where dogs are allowed, for contrast
It is a short list, and worth having.
- Fire roads within Cape Cod National Seashore, leashed, year round
- Doane Trail in Eastham and Pilgrim Spring Trail in Truro, leashed
- Head of the Meadow Bicycle Trail, leashed, year round
- Wiley Park walking trails in Eastham, per the town's own beach rules: "Dogs are allowed on the Wiley Park walking trails throughout the year."
- The Dyer Prince and Rock Harbor area in Eastham, on leash, before 9 in the morning and after 4 in the afternoon, during the June 15 to Labor Day closure
- Private beaches and Town Conservation Lands in Sandwich, per the town: "Dogs are still welcome on private beaches and Town Conservation Lands."
- Provincetown town beaches, restrained outside the off-leash windows and off leash within them
- Most town beaches out of season, on the towns' own terms, with Dennis noting "The rest of the year dogs are welcome on the beaches"
Frequently asked questions
Where are dogs banned on Cape Cod? Playgrounds year round in Eastham, most town beaches across the summer on eight different calendars, beach parking lots and unattended vehicles in several towns, all National Seashore walking trails except Doane and Pilgrim Spring, the Nauset and Province Lands bike trails from May 1 to October 31, Seashore freshwater ponds from May 15 to October 15, posted shorebird areas, lifeguard-protected beaches in summer, the West and Sunset horse trails, park trams, and ferry food service areas and seating.
Can I leave my dog in the car at a Cape Cod beach? No, in several towns. Falmouth's regulations name leaving pets in parked vehicles. Brewster names unattended vehicles. Eastham bans pets in vehicles in the parking areas during its closure period. It is also a heat risk, and two towns publish material about dogs in hot cars.
Are dogs allowed on Cape Cod hiking trails? Only two walking trails inside the National Seashore allow pets, Doane in Eastham and Pilgrim Spring in Truro, plus all fire roads within the park. Eastham separately allows dogs on the Wiley Park walking trails all year.
Are dogs allowed on the Cape Cod bike trails? Head of the Meadow Bicycle Trail allows leashed pets year round. The Nauset and Province Lands bike trails allow them only from November 1 to April 30.
Can my dog swim in a Cape Cod pond? Not in Seashore freshwater ponds between May 15 and October 15. Sandwich also warns that blue green algae can appear as water warms in early summer and that ingestion can cause serious illness for people and pets.
Are dogs allowed on the ferry? Yes, free of charge, on a leash or in a container and under control at all times. They are not allowed in any food service area, and not on any passenger seat or table. Service assistance animals are excepted from the food service restriction.
