Carmel With a Dog, Month by Month: All 12 Ranked

Carmel is rarely above 76 degrees in any month, so the usual seasonal logic does not apply. What ranks the months for a dog is clear sky, dry ground, and how many people are in the way.

Most seaside towns rank their months by temperature. Carmel does not work that way, because Carmel barely has a temperature. The town typically sits between 44 and 67 degrees all year and is rarely above 76. There is no month in which the sand is too hot for a dog and no month in which the beach closes to dogs.

So the ranking below is not built on weather alone. It is built on three things that actually change your dog's trip: how clear the sky is, how wet the ground is, and how many other human beings are standing between your dog and the door of a restaurant.

That third factor is the one visitors underestimate, and it is why the month with the best weather is not the month at the top, and the month most people picture as peak season sits dead last.

The ranking at a glance

Rank Month Why
1 October Warmest, clearest, quietest. The best month, and it is not close.
2 September Nearly as good, slightly busier at the start.
3 May Warm and bright before the fog settles in for summer.
4 November Sunny, empty, cool. Rain starts arriving late in the month.
5 April Green, mild, spring energy, some rain still around.
6 June The marine layer arrives, and for a dog that is fine.
7 March Mild and green, wetter than April.
8 July Foggiest month, and Bach Festival fills the village.
9 December Wet and cool, plus holiday crowds in a very small town.
10 February Rain, and the Pro-Am takes over the peninsula for a week.
11 January Coolest and wettest. Empty, though, which counts for something.
12 August Fog plus Car Week. The hardest month to travel here with a dog.

1. October

The best month of the year, and locals barely bother hiding it. October falls inside what the peninsula calls the secret season, when the summer marine layer has retreated and afternoons run from the mid-60s into the low 70s under clear sky.

For a dog, the compounding effect is what matters. The beach is dry, the light lasts, the patios are open, the trails inland are past their dusty peak, and the summer crowds have gone home. You get a mile of off-leash sand with perhaps a dozen other dogs on it. Everything in Carmel Beach is legally off-leash works better in October than in any other month.

2. September

September is often warmer and clearer than July, which surprises first-time visitors. The ocean is also at its annual warmest, since sea temperature lags air temperature by a couple of months.

The one caution is the first week. Labor Day weekend still fills the village. From roughly the second week on, September behaves like October with slightly softer light.

3. May

May frequently records some of the highest temperatures of the year, because it arrives before the marine layer establishes itself for the summer. Clear mornings, dry trails, and long evenings.

Note one closure if you are planning 17-Mile Drive with a dog. Fanshell Overlook shuts from 1 April to 1 June each year for harbour seal pupping, so a May trip loses that stop.

4. November

Underrated. The secret season holds through much of November, the town is genuinely quiet, and the first real rain usually waits until late in the month.

Bring the towel. Nights get cold and the wind off the Pacific bites, which matters more for a small or thin-coated dog than the daytime number suggests.

5. April

Green hills, wildflowers in Garland Ranch Regional Park, and mild coastal days. Spring is the prettiest inland month of the year.

Two things pull it down. Rain is still in play, and Fanshell Overlook closes on 1 April. Foxtails are not yet a problem in April, which is a genuine advantage over summer for anyone walking dry grassland.

6. June

June Gloom begins. The marine layer sits over the coastline for most of the day, and visitors who came for a sunny California beach holiday feel cheated.

Your dog does not. Overcast and 62 degrees is close to ideal for a retriever on sand, and the ground never approaches burn temperature. The full argument is in Carmel's fog is a feature. June ranks sixth rather than higher only because the grey days genuinely do affect what you want to do between walks.

7. March

Mild, green, and quiet, with rain still frequent enough to shape your plans. A wet dog on Carmel Beach in March is a cold dog within ten minutes of leaving the sand.

March suits an inland-weighted trip. Carmel Valley sits outside the marine layer and is often several degrees warmer, which makes it the right call on a grey March afternoon. Tasting-room patios there are covered in Carmel tasting rooms that welcome dogs.

8. July

The foggiest month, and the busiest of the summer inside the village itself, because the Carmel Bach Festival runs across roughly two weeks in the middle of the month. In 2026 it runs 11 to 25 July.

What that means with a dog. Restaurant patios book out, parking in the village becomes difficult, and the pavements are busy in the evenings. Nothing about it is unsafe. It simply removes the spaciousness that makes Carmel pleasant with an animal.

9. December

Cool, frequently wet, and busy in a way that catches people out. A town of roughly one square mile absorbs holiday visitors badly.

The redeeming feature is the beach at first light. December mornings on empty sand, with the fire pits cold and nobody else out, are among the best walks of the year. Everything else about December is a compromise.

10. February

February is the peninsula's other crowd event. The AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am fills the whole area with golf spectators, professionals, and media for a full week, and hotel rates move accordingly.

Plan around the tournament week, not the month. Outside it, February is quiet, cool, and often has bright breaks between fronts. Check dates on the Visit Carmel annual events calendar before you book, and cross-check hotel pricing against Carmel hotels for dogs, ranked.

11. January

The coolest and wettest month. Storms come through in sequence, the ocean is rough, and sleeper waves are at their most dangerous. There is no lifeguard at Carmel Beach at any time of year.

January's compensation is emptiness. You will have the sand largely to yourself, hotel rates are at their lowest, and every restaurant patio has space. If your dog is happy in rain and you own good waterproofs, January is better than its rank suggests.

12. August

Last, and the reasoning is specific rather than about weather.

August is foggy, which as established is fine. What is not fine is that Monterey Car Week runs across ten days in the middle of the month, drawing well over 100,000 visitors to the county, with events spread across Carmel-by-the-Sea, Carmel Valley, Pebble Beach, and Monterey. In 2026 it runs 7 to 16 August, ending with the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance.

Why this is a dog problem, not just a crowd problem. Highway 1 and the Monterey approaches become slow, which lengthens the drive to the emergency hospital covered in emergency and after-hours vets near Carmel. Patio tables are impossible without a booking. Hotel rates reach their annual peak. And 17-Mile Drive, normally a straightforward outing, is congested for the duration. The Visit Monterey Car Week page publishes the schedule.

Late August recovers. Once the cars leave, the last week of the month behaves like early September, which is to say very good.

The three rules that apply in every month

Carmel Beach is off leash all year. There is no seasonal restriction and no summer curfew, which is unusual and is the single biggest reason to come here rather than to most other California beach towns. Rules are on the City of Carmel-by-the-Sea beach and parks page.

Point Lobos bans dogs in every month. California State Parks is unambiguous: dogs are not allowed anywhere in the reserve and cannot be left in parked vehicles. Alternatives are in Point Lobos bans dogs, 7 alternatives within 25 minutes.

Carmel has no street numbers in any month either. Learn to describe your location by street, side, and cross-street before you need to. The reasons and the method are in Carmel still has no street numbers.

What changes across the year, and what never does

It is worth separating the two, because visitors tend to plan around the wrong one.

Genuinely seasonal. Rainfall, which concentrates from December into March. Crowd load, which spikes three times a year for named events and once more over the winter holidays. Hotel pricing, which follows crowd load rather than weather. Trail conditions inland, where spring is green and soft, summer is dry and dusty, and foxtails become a real hazard from roughly late spring through autumn. Sea state, which is roughest in winter.

Not seasonal at all. Beach access for dogs. Ground temperature, which never reaches the level at which paws burn. The absence of a lifeguard. The absence of street numbers. Point Lobos, which excludes dogs every day of the year. Restaurant rules, since California permits dogs on outdoor patios at the operator's discretion regardless of month.

The practical version of that split is simple. You are not choosing a month for your dog's comfort, because every month is comfortable. You are choosing a month for space, dryness, and daylight.

If you can only pick one

Go in October. If October is impossible, go in the second half of September or in May. If your dates are fixed and they land in August, book everything early, avoid 7 to 16 August entirely, and spend more of the trip in Carmel Valley than in the village.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best month to visit Carmel with a dog? October. It combines the warmest and clearest weather of the year with the thinnest crowds, and Carmel Beach is off leash year round so there is no seasonal restriction to work around.

Is Carmel Beach off leash all year? Yes. Carmel Beach permits off-leash dogs under voice control with no seasonal closure, which is unusual among California beaches.

When should I avoid Carmel with a dog? The ten days of Monterey Car Week in mid-August, tournament week for the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am in February, and the two weeks of the Carmel Bach Festival in July. Each brings crowds that make patios, parking, and driving considerably harder.

Is winter too wet for a dog trip to Carmel? It is the wettest period and it is also the emptiest and cheapest. If your dog tolerates rain and you carry a towel every time, January and February are workable. The risk is cold rather than heat, because wind off the Pacific on wet fur drops body temperature fast.

Does the fog ruin a summer trip? Not for the dog. The marine layer keeps the ground below the temperature at which paws burn, so summer here has no dawn-only walking rule. It affects the human half of the trip more than the canine half.

Which month is cheapest? January, followed by the non-tournament weeks of February. Peak pricing is mid-August during Car Week.
