Dog Parks in Charleston: 7 City Parks, 2 County Parks, and One Wednesday Morning to Avoid

Charleston has more off-leash infrastructure than almost any city its size on this coast, including seven free fenced parks and one walkable from the historic district. It also has a Wednesday morning maintenance closure that nobody warns you about.

Charleston has more off-leash infrastructure than almost any city its size on this coast. Seven fenced dog parks run by the city, all free and all open dawn until dusk, plus off-leash dog parks inside the Charleston County park system with separate areas for large and small dogs.

And one detail nobody else publishes: the dog park at James Island County Park is closed on Wednesdays from 7 to 9 a.m. for maintenance. If you have driven across town for an early Wednesday run, that is worth knowing before you pay at the gate.

Here is the full list, from the authorities' own pages, with what is confirmed and what is not.

The city's seven, all free, all dawn until dusk

From the City of Charleston's dog parks page:

Park Address
Ackerman Park Dog Park 55 Sycamore Avenue
Grove Street Dog Park 83-147 Grove Street
Bees Landing Rec Center Dog Park 1580 Ashley Gardens Blvd
James Island Rec Center Dog Park 1088 Quail Drive
S Adgers Wharf Dog Park 41 S Adgers Wharf
Medway Park Fenced Dog Run 2113 Medway Road
Governor's Park Dog Park 165 Fairbanks Drive

Every one of them is listed as "Open dawn until dusk."

Seven fenced facilities spread across the peninsula, West Ashley and James Island is genuinely good coverage. S Adgers Wharf in particular sits down by the water at the southern end of the peninsula, which means a downtown visitor staying near the historic district has an off-leash option within walking distance rather than a drive.

What the city does not publish, and what we are therefore not going to state: opening times more precise than dawn to dusk, permit requirements, fees, vaccination requirements, or which parks separate large dogs from small. The page directs questions to the Citizen Services Desk on 843-724-7311.

So call that number if any of those matter to you. Or ask your hotel front desk, which will have sent guests to the nearest one many times.

The county's two big ones

Charleston County Parks is a separate authority with its own rules, its own hours and an admission charge.

James Island County Park, 871 Riverland Dr, Charleston, SC 29412, on (843) 406-6990.

The county describes it as one of the area's most popular off-leash dog parks: "Let your four-legged friends run free in one of the area's most popular off-leash dog parks, featuring separate areas for large and small dogs."

Hours, and they change four times a year:

Season Park hours
January to April 8 a.m. to sunset
May to August 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.
September and October 8 a.m. to sunset
November and December 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

And the detail that catches people: "Gate closes to incoming traffic 30 minutes before park closes." So a 4:45 p.m. arrival in December does not get you in.

Admission: "Admission is $2 per person, with free entry for Gold Pass members and children ages 2 and under."

And the maintenance window: "The dog park is closed on Wednesdays from 7 - 9 a.m. for routine maintenance."

That is the most useful single line on the page for anyone planning an early run. Wednesday before nine, go somewhere else.

Johns Island County Park, 2662 Mullet Hall Rd, Johns Island, SC 29455, on (843) 762-9965.

More than 700 acres, best known for its equestrian facilities, with walking trails, an archery range and a disc golf course. The county lists a dog park here as well.

Hours: 8 a.m. to sunset from January to April, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. from May to August, and 8 a.m. to sunset from September to December. Same $2 admission and same Gold Pass exemption.

What we could not confirm: the specifics of the Johns Island dog park itself, including whether it has separate large and small dog areas. The page we read covers the wider park. Call the county on (843) 795-4386 if that matters.

The county rules that apply in all of them

Charleston County publishes a consistent rule set across its parks, and three lines of it matter to a dog owner.

"Pets must be kept on a leash, cleaned up after, and under control at all times." That is the rule outside the designated off-leash areas, and it appears on every park rules page including Folly Beach County Park and Kiawah Beachwalker Park.

The leash length is six feet. The county's general rule is that animals in parks shall be attended and on a leash not more than six feet long, except for dogs in an officially designated off-leash area.

And the one that reshapes a day: "For their safety, pets may not be left in vehicles."

That is a rule, not advice, and it applies across the county's parks. So if you are visiting a county park where part of your group wants to do something the dog cannot, the car is not the answer. Plan the split instead.

Once you leave the dog park, the leash goes back on. The county is explicit that the off-leash permission attaches to the designated facility, not to the park around it.

What a dog park gives you here that the beaches do not

Charleston's beaches are unusually good for off-leash access, so it is worth being clear about when a dog park is still the better call.

In high summer. Isle of Palms off leash runs 5 a.m. to 9 a.m. from 1 April to 14 September. Folly Beach closes to dogs entirely from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. from 1 May to 30 September. The dog parks have no seasonal closure at all, which makes them the answer to the middle of a July day.

When the tide or the crowd is wrong. A fenced park is a known quantity.

When your dog's recall is not beach-proof. Every off-leash beach allowance on this coast is conditional on control. Isle of Palms requires you to "have leash in hand, have their dog under voice command." Kiawah and Seabrook both require effective control and the ability to leash on request. A fence removes that pressure.

When you have driven past the licence problem. Sullivan's Island requires a licence from Town Hall for all dogs including day-trippers, per the Charleston Area CVB's beach rules page. A dog park does not.

Our dog park etiquette guide covers reading a park before you unclip, which is worth doing at an unfamiliar one.

The rules to assume even where they are not posted

Since the city does not publish entry requirements, here is the sensible baseline for the region.

Carry rabies documentation. South Carolina requires continuous rabies protection. Isle of Palms goes further and requires that dogs living in or visiting the city have "a metal license tag attached to its collar with the name of the licensed veterinarian who provided the vaccine." Even where a dog park does not check, having the tag and the paperwork costs nothing.

Our pet health and vaccination tracker keeps the dates straight when "current" is the standard.

Bring your own water. No city page promises a fountain.

Bring bags. The City of Charleston's ordinance summary puts it in the code: "Sec. 14-2(f): It shall be unlawful for any owner, or walker of any pet to permit the pet to discharge its waste except upon their property unless the waste is immediately removed."

Leash on the way in and out. That is a stated county requirement and universal good practice.

Check the surface temperature. A fenced park with compacted ground in a Charleston August is hotter than sand. Our summer heat safety for pets guide has the test.

Which one to choose

Staying downtown and want to walk there: S Adgers Wharf Dog Park, 41 S Adgers Wharf.

Staying in West Ashley: Bees Landing Rec Center Dog Park at 1580 Ashley Gardens Blvd, or Ackerman Park at 55 Sycamore Avenue.

On James Island: the James Island Rec Center Dog Park at 1088 Quail Drive is free, or James Island County Park at $2 a head for the bigger facility with separated areas.

Want the best facility and do not mind paying: James Island County Park, avoiding Wednesday before 9 a.m.

Want quiet and space: Johns Island County Park, 700 acres and a long way from the city.

Before you go

Save the emergency number. Charleston Veterinary Referral Center at 3484 Shelby Ray Court on (843) 614-8387 states it "is ALWAYS open 24/7/365" and describes itself as a VECCS Level 1 certified 24-hour emergency and specialty animal hospital. Dog parks are where scuffles happen, so have it ready. Our emergency vet guide covers the rest.

And the right animal control line. The city's ordinance summary lists non-emergency police and animal control on 577-7434 to "report animals at large."

Where to stay

Seven free city parks spread across the city means most bases have one nearby, which is a real advantage over destinations where the only off-leash option is a drive. Downtown near the historic district gives you a walkable one at S Adgers Wharf.

Our pet-friendly hotels in Charleston page covers the city, the Charleston hotel directory covers the wider area, and our questions to ask before booking a pet-friendly hotel list includes asking which dog park the front desk recommends.

Conclusion

Seven free fenced parks from the city, dawn until dusk, one of them walkable from the historic district. Two big county parks at $2 a head, with separated large and small dog areas and seasonal hours that shorten to 5 p.m. in December.

Avoid James Island County Park's dog park on Wednesday mornings before nine. Carry water, bags and the rabies paperwork. And remember that the county's no-pets-in-vehicles rule means the car is never the waiting room.
