Denver With a Dog, Month by Month: All 12 Ranked Around Sundown
Denver's limiting factor is daylight. Sixteen of its seventeen dog parks are unlighted and close at sundown, so in December the entire off-leash system contracts to one park by mid-afternoon.
Denver, Colorado10 min readThings to Do
Denver's constraint is not heat or cold. It is daylight.
Sixteen of the city's seventeen dog parks are unlighted, and the city's rule is that "Unlighted dog parks are open from sunrise to sundown, 7 days a week." Only Railyard Dog Park at 19th Avenue and Little Raven has lighting, where the hours run 5 a.m. to 11 p.m.
So in a Denver December, the entire off-leash system contracts to one park after about half past four in the afternoon. That single fact reorders the calendar, and it is why this ranking looks different from our other cities.
The ranking
| Rank | Month | The short version |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | September | Long evenings still, cool mornings, mountains open |
| 2 | May | Daylight back, heat not yet a factor |
| 3 | June | Longest days of the year, so every park is usable late |
| 4 | April | Good walking, variable weather, spring in the foothills |
| 5 | October | Crisp and clear, but sundown starts to bite |
| 6 | August | Warm, long days, and the mountain roads at their best |
| 7 | July | Hottest, with triple-digit potential, so dawn only |
| 8 | March | Denver's snowiest stretch can land here |
| 9 | November | Sundown before five, and cold arriving |
| 10 | February | Short days, hard freezes, decent sun |
| 11 | January | Coldest, shortest, and only one park after dark |
| 12 | December | Sundown around half four, and the least daylight of the year |
No month is unusable. Railyard is open until 11 p.m. every night of the year, the state parks sell off-leash passes, and leashed walking is unrestricted. The ranking is about how much of the day the off-leash system is actually available.
The three things doing the ranking
Daylight, because of the lighting rule. From the city's dog parks page: "Railyard Dog Park is the only off-leash area with lighting", "Unlighted dog parks are open from sunrise to sundown, 7 days a week", and "Lighted dog parks are open from 5am-11pm, 7 days a week." The rules also bar dogs from a dog park "when the dog park is dark and unlighted."
Heat, in the middle of the year. Denver's own seasonal pet safety page notes that "A majority of days in Denver are sunny and summer temperatures can climb into the triple digits", and that a car interior "can reach 120°F in a matter of minutes, even if temperatures are mild and windows are open."
Cold, at both ends. The same page requires "adequate outdoor shelter such as a doghouse, porch area, or a similar structure that allows the animal to escape the elements", and warns that failing to protect a pet from extreme temperatures can lead to a cruelty or neglect charge "up to a $999 fine and/or a year in jail for the owner."
What does not change with the month
The dog park entry conditions. Spayed or neutered, or a current Denver Intact Permit. Current rabies with the tag attached to the collar or harness. A Denver dog licence. Not in estrus. Not a puppy too young to vaccinate.
The two-dog cap. "Any one person may not be in charge of more than two (2) dogs at a time."
The breed rule. Denver requires a Breed-Restricted Permit for American pit bull terriers, American Staffordshire terriers and Staffordshire bull terriers, and its own FAQ says a visiting dog needs one to be within city and county limits at any time. That is a before-you-travel item in every month of the year.
The fines. $80 for a first leash violation, $150 for a first excrement violation, $250 for a first sterilisation violation, per the city's citation schedule.
1. September, the best month
Warm days, cool mornings, and evenings that still stretch past a working day, so the unlighted parks remain usable after five. The mountain roads are open and the alpine air is comfortable rather than punishing.
Do: a morning at one of the seventeen dog parks, then an afternoon at Red Rocks, where the venue states that "Pets are welcome in the amphitheatre during non-event hours" on a leash. Check the events calendar first.
2. May
Daylight is long again and the heat has not arrived. The best month for a long leashed walk in the city, and the point at which the state park off-leash areas become properly pleasant.
Do: Chatfield State Park, gates open 5 a.m. to 10 p.m., with a $3 daily dog off-leash pass covering a handler and up to three dogs on top of a $12 to $17 vehicle pass, per its park page.
3. June
The longest days of the year, which in Denver means the unlighted parks are open latest. Heat is starting but mornings and evenings are both usable.
Watch: the middle of the day. Our summer heat safety for pets guide covers the back-of-the-hand surface test.
4. April
Good walking weather with an asterisk, because spring storms in Colorado are real. The foothills are at their greenest and the crowds have not arrived.
5. October
Crisp, clear and beautiful, and the month where the daylight problem becomes noticeable. By late October the unlighted parks are closing in the early evening.
Do: shift the dog park visit to lunchtime, and keep Railyard in reserve for after work.
6. August
Warm, long-dayed, and the best month for the high mountain roads. Denver's own Mount Blue Sky, which the city describes as rising "more than 14,000 feet above Denver's front range" with the highest paved road in North America, needs a timed entry reservation for vehicles and motorcycles, bookable at recreation.gov, with free passes available through Denver Public Library and Clear Creek County Library District.
Watch the altitude. PetMD puts the threshold for pets above 8,000 feet, and that road goes far past it.
7. July
The hot one. Denver says triple digits are possible, and the parked-car warning is at its most urgent.
Do: be at the dog park at sunrise, and treat the rest of the day as indoor time or patio time in shade. Colorado's patio rule, C.R.S. 25-4-1615, permits dogs in outdoor dining areas under seven conditions, the practical one being a separate entrance so the dog never passes through the restaurant.
8. March
Often Denver's snowiest stretch, which is counterintuitive if you are booking from somewhere with a normal winter. Daylight is improving, footing is not.
Do: carry a towel, check paws for ice balls between the toes, and use the sunny middle of the day.
9. November
Sundown before five, cold arriving, and sixteen parks closing with the light.
Do: Railyard Dog Park after work, or accept that the dog's exercise happens at lunchtime. Our cold weather pet safety guide covers the shorter-walk approach.
10. February
Short days with genuinely good sun, and the risk of a hard freeze. Denver's guidance for freezing weather is to bring pets inside, keep walks short, and watch for shivering, lethargy, weakness and shallow breathing.
11. January
Coldest and among the shortest. The off-leash system is effectively Railyard plus whatever you can fit into daylight.
Do: short frequent walks rather than one long one, and a state park at the weekend when you have the daylight to drive out.
12. December
The least daylight of the year. Sundown lands in the middle of the afternoon, which closes sixteen of the seventeen dog parks before most people finish work.
Do: plan around Railyard at 19th and Little Raven, which is open until 11 p.m. If your trip is built around off-leash time, December is the month to book a hotel near it. Our pet-friendly hotels in Denver page lists what each property charges and allows, and the Denver hotel directory covers the metro.
The winter kit, briefly
Denver's own cold-weather guidance is specific, and worth following rather than improvising:
- bring pets inside, because "pets are still at risk of hypothermia in freezing weather"
- keep walks short
- check paws so that "balls of ice haven't formed between their toes"
- provide shelter off the ground with the door facing away from the wind, with thick dry bedding
- avoid space heaters and heat lamps because of fire risk, and heating pads because they can burn skin
- watch for shivering, lethargy, weakness and shallow breathing, and for frostbite showing as "red, swollen areas or pale, white areas" on ears and tails
And one Denver-specific habit from the same page for anyone parking outside: "Hit the hood of your car before starting the engine", because cats shelter in engine compartments.
The summer kit, briefly
From the same source: never leave a pet alone in a vehicle, know that dogs "sweat small amounts through their paws and nose, but not enough to release excess body heat", and treat obese, elderly, very young, long-haired, dark-haired and flat-faced dogs as higher risk.
If you find someone else's dog in a hot car, the city's instruction is to "call 311 and familiarize yourself with the Good Samaritan law", noting that the state offers legal immunity for those who break into a locked vehicle.
Six metro hospitals publish 24-hour cover, including VEG Denver at 3845 East Colfax Avenue on (720) 574-9834 and VRCC at 3550 S Jason St in Englewood on (303) 874-7387. Our emergency vet, what to know guide covers the call, and our pet first aid basics guide covers the interval before you arrive.
Conclusion
September, May and June are the months to bring a dog to Denver, and December, January and February are the months to plan around a single lit dog park.
That is an unusual way to rank a city, and it comes straight from the city's own rule: sixteen of seventeen off-leash areas close at sundown, and in a Colorado winter sundown is the middle of the afternoon.
