Read this before you need it, because the honest answer for Door County is difficult.

There is no 24-hour emergency veterinary hospital in Door County. BluePearl's Green Bay hospital has closed, and its Green Bay and Fox Valley operations were consolidated at the Appleton site. The nearest 24-hour hospital is now VEG ER for Pets in Bellevue, just outside Green Bay.

The nearest 24-hour emergency hospital is now in Bellevue, just outside Green Bay. BluePearl in Appleton, well over 100 miles from Sturgeon Bay, remains the hospital local clinics refer to.

That is the situation. Everything below follows from it, and the single most important action is to save two numbers now.

The 24-hour emergency hospital

1. BluePearl Pet Hospital Fox Valley

4706 New Horizons Blvd, Appleton, WI 54914 (920) 993-9193 Emergency: 24/7. Urgent care: Tuesday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Specialty: by appointment.

This is the emergency hospital that Door County's own veterinary clinics refer clients to. The Animal Clinic of Sturgeon Bay names it directly on its emergency page.

Distance is the problem. Appleton is over two hours from Sturgeon Bay in normal conditions, and Sturgeon Bay is itself around 70 miles from the tip of the peninsula. From Northport Pier or Washington Island, you are looking at a very long journey with a sick animal.

Call before you drive. Always, and from the road if necessary, so they can prepare.

A hospital that is coming, and one that has gone

Two changes worth knowing, because older listings and search results will send you to the wrong place.

BluePearl's Green Bay hospital on Lime Kiln Road has closed. The Green Bay and Fox Valley hospitals were united, with services moving to the Fox Valley location in Appleton. Do not drive to Lime Kiln Road.

A 24-hour emergency hospital is now open in Bellevue, just outside Green Bay. VEG states that its Bellevue hospital "is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week" and is located at 2234 Monroe Rd, Suite 150, "just minutes from downtown Green Bay." Its Google business listing gives the phone number as (920) 308-3981.

Save the Bellevue number before your trip. Call (920) 308-3981 before you drive, as you would with any emergency hospital, so the team can prepare.

The daytime practices in Door County

None of these is an emergency hospital. They matter because they cover the hours when a two-hour drive is avoidable, and because a same-day appointment costs far less than an emergency admission.

2. Animal Clinic of Sturgeon Bay, LLC

130 S. Madison Ave, Sturgeon Bay, WI 54235 (920) 743-2628 Monday to Friday 8:00am to 5:30pm, closed 12:00 to 1:00pm. First Saturday of the month 8:00am to 2:00pm. Closed Sunday.

The clinic states plainly that it is an outpatient practice operating by appointment and is not able to provide 24-hour emergency care. During regular hours it may offer urgent care to established patients, including examination, assessment, pain management, and stabilisation, and will then decide whether to continue treatment or transfer to an emergency facility.

That is the right expectation to hold. A Door County practice can stabilise. Appleton is where an emergency finishes.

3. Door County Veterinary Hospital

3915 Old Highway Rd, Sturgeon Bay, WI (920) 743-7777 Monday to Friday 7:30am to 5:30pm, Wednesday until 6:30pm. Closed Saturday.

The 7:30am opening is the earliest in the county, which genuinely matters if something went wrong overnight and you want to be seen before deciding whether to drive to Appleton. The Wednesday 6:30pm close is the latest weekday finish locally.

4. Peninsula Veterinary Hospital, Sturgeon Bay

5654 County Rd T, Sturgeon Bay, WI 54235 920-743-7789

A third Sturgeon Bay practice. Confirm current contact details and hours before relying on it, and note that Door County government publishes a veterinary clinic contact list which is the best single place to check current numbers.

Door County Public Health publishes the full clinic list, and two more practices on it are worth having written down: Bayside Veterinary Clinic, 3773 Egg Harbor Rd, Sturgeon Bay, on 920-743-8890, and Four Legged Friends Veterinary Clinic, 130 Commerce Dr, Luxemburg, on 920-845-2450. Neither is an emergency hospital, but on a county with this little after-hours cover, more daytime numbers is better than fewer.

5. Northern Door Pet Clinic, Sister Bay

10393 Northwoods Dr, Sister Bay, WI (920) 854-4979 Feline only

The only veterinary practice identified in the northern half of the peninsula, and the crucial detail is that it is a cat clinic. If you are staying in Sister Bay, Ephraim, Fish Creek, or Baileys Harbor with a dog, your nearest option is still Sturgeon Bay, roughly 40 minutes south.

Worth knowing precisely because it looks like an option on a map and is not one for a dog.

The 24-hour phone resource

6. Animal poison control lines

ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center: (888) 426-4435 Pet Poison Helpline: (855) 764-7661

Both operate around the clock. The Animal Clinic of Sturgeon Bay's own emergency page lists the national poison control line with a $110 consultation fee, so budget for it.

In Door County these lines are worth more than almost anywhere. If your dog has eaten something and the nearest emergency hospital is two hours away, a five-minute call that establishes whether the dose is actually dangerous either saves you a pointless overnight drive or starts treatment planning before you set off.

Which to call, by when it happens

Weekday daytime, anywhere in the county. Door County Veterinary Hospital from 7:30am, or the Animal Clinic of Sturgeon Bay from 8:00am. Both are in Sturgeon Bay.

Weekday evening or overnight. BluePearl Fox Valley in Appleton, (920) 993-9193. Call from the road.

Saturday. The Animal Clinic of Sturgeon Bay opens on the first Saturday of the month only. Every other Saturday, Appleton.

Sunday. Appleton.

Anything swallowed, at any hour. Poison control first, then decide whether to drive.

Anywhere north of Sturgeon Bay. Remember that the Sister Bay clinic is feline only, so a dog emergency in the northern villages means driving south regardless.

Before you need any of this

Save both numbers now. (920) 743-7777 and (920) 993-9193. Do it before you leave home.

Screenshot the Appleton address. Rural Wisconsin has patchy signal and mapping apps need it.

Understand the geography properly. Sturgeon Bay is the southern gateway, and the peninsula runs roughly 70 more miles north from there to Northport Pier. Add Washington Island or Rock Island on top and you are on a boat with a ferry timetable between you and any veterinarian at all.

Do not take a dog with an existing health problem to Rock Island. Two ferries out means two ferries back, and the Karfi runs late May to early October only.

Carry your dog's records on your phone: vaccination history and current medications.

Save VEG's Bellevue number, (920) 308-3981, before you travel, because it is now the nearest 24-hour emergency hospital to the county.

What actually goes wrong in Door County

Ticks and tick-borne disease. Wisconsin has a substantial tick population and Door County's woods, grassy edges, and old field habitat are prime. Check ears, armpits, groin, and between the toes after every walk, and discuss prevention with your veterinarian before the trip.

Blue-green algae. Cyanobacteria blooms occur in Wisconsin waters, particularly in warm, still, or slow-moving water, and can be lethal to dogs, who drink while swimming and lick their coats afterwards. Avoid water with visible scum, foam, or a paint-like surface, and check current Wisconsin advisories. This is the hazard that most warrants an immediate call.

Falls on wet dolomite. Door County's shoreline rock is slick when wet and much of the best walking is on it. Cave Point County Park is the specific risk: undercut ledges, wave action, and deep cold water immediately below. Keep the leash short there.

Cold water and steep exits. Lake Michigan is cold well into summer, and several access points are easier to get into than out of, particularly with a heavy dog.

Winter footing and road salt. The county averages around 53 inches of snow a year. Rinse paws after town walks.

General guidance is in emergency vet, what to know, the water rules are in 9 Door County dog beaches, ranked, and seasonal planning is in Door County with a dog, month by month.

Conclusion

Door County is a superb place to take a dog and a hard place to get one treated.

Three daytime practices, all in Sturgeon Bay at the southern end. One clinic in the north, and it treats cats only. No 24-hour emergency hospital in the county, none in Green Bay since the closure there, and the nearest confirmed one in Appleton, over two hours from Sturgeon Bay and considerably further from the tip.

So: save (920) 743-7777 for a weekday and (920) 993-9193 for everything else. Call poison control first if your dog ate something. Keep the leash short on wet dolomite and out of scummy water. And save (920) 308-3981 for VEG in Bellevue, near Green Bay, which is now open around the clock and is the nearest 24-hour hospital.

Clinic hours, addresses, phone numbers, ownership, and openings all change, and this region has seen recent closures and consolidations. Confirm current details by calling before you travel and again before you drive in an emergency. This article is general information and is not veterinary advice. Then find the shore your pet will wag "yes" to.
