Martha's Vineyard With a Dog, Month by Month: All 12 Ranked
The tourist calendar and the dog calendar barely overlap on this island. Closures begin on 1 April and lift on 30 September, which inverts the usual ranking entirely.
Martha's Vineyard, Massachusetts10 min readThings to Do
Most seasonal guides to this island rank the months by weather and crowds. For a dog, neither is the deciding factor.
One date decides almost everything: 1 April. That is when the closures start, because that is when the piping plovers arrive. And 30 September is when most of them lift, because that is when the last chicks fledge. The tourist calendar and the dog calendar are two different calendars, and they barely overlap.
Which produces a genuinely unusual result. The best months to bring a dog here are the ones the island is least busy, and the worst are the ones everybody else books.
The ranking at a glance
| Rank | Month | Why |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | October | Closures lift, Derby energy, warm sea, empty trails |
| 2 | May | Before peak nesting bites, before the crowds, everything open |
| 3 | November | Fully open, genuinely quiet, cold but clear |
| 4 | September | Closures easing, sea at its warmest, but State Beach still restricted by hour |
| 5 | April | The month it all shuts, but early April is still open |
| 6 | December | Open access, short days, some businesses closed |
| 7 | March | Open until the birds arrive, cold and raw |
| 8 | June | Peak nesting, rising crowds, but long light |
| 9 | February | Everything open, almost nothing else open |
| 10 | January | Same, plus the worst weather |
| 11 | July | Maximum closures, maximum crowds |
| 12 | August | The same, plus the heat |
1. October
The best month, and it is not close.
Almost every closure lifts. Wasque's beach reopens to dogs on 1 October after being shut since 1 April. Cape Poge's stated leash window runs October through April. The Land Bank's seasonal bans, which run April to September across nine properties, are done.
The sea is at its warmest. Water temperature lags air temperature by roughly two months on this coast, so early October water is warmer than June water.
The island is emptying but still open. The Chappy Ferry keeps its summer schedule until the Saturday in mid-October when the MV Derby ends, so you get late crossings and a functioning town.
One caveat. The Derby brings serious fishing traffic to the beaches. Not crowds exactly, but people with rods who will not thank a loose dog.
2. May
The best of the open-access months at the front end of the year.
Nesting has started but the closures are new. Plovers return in late March or April, and Massachusetts puts the peak of laying in the first few weeks of May. So the birds are on the ground, the seasonal bans are in force, and the enforcement pressure is lower than it will be in July.
The compensations are real. Long light, mild weather, everything opening for the season, and the Chappy Ferry switches to its summer schedule the Thursday before Memorial Day.
What is closed. State Beach since 1 April. Wasque's sand since 1 April. The Land Bank's great-pond beaches since April. Hillman's Point Preserve closes to dogs from May.
So use the trails. The 25 Land Bank properties on year-round immediate control are unaffected by any of this, and May is a lovely month to walk them.
3. November
The most underrated month on the island for a dog.
Everything is open to you and almost nothing is open to anyone else. Full access to Wasque, Cape Poge on a lead, every Land Bank beach, and no queue for anything.
Cold rather than harsh. This is a coastal island at 59 feet above sea level, so it moderates. The wind is the issue, not the temperature.
Bring the towel and the coat. A wet dog in November wind off Vineyard Sound gets cold fast, particularly a small or thin-coated one.
4. September
Nearly excellent, and one rule holds it back.
The sea is at its best and the crowds thin after Labor Day.
But State Beach is still restricted, by the hour. Dogs are not permitted between 9 am and 5 pm through September. It is the only rule on the island that turns on the clock rather than the calendar, and it exists because late-laid nests are still fledging.
Wasque's beach stays shut until 30 September. So does most of the Land Bank's seasonal set.
The move is early and late. A September dog day here is a dawn walk and an evening walk, with the middle of the day spent somewhere that is not a beach.
5. April
A month of two halves, and the split is abrupt.
Early April is still winter access. The earliest plover nests are laid in mid-April, so the first week or two can be genuinely open.
Then it shuts. State Beach closes to dogs on 1 April regardless. Wasque's beach closes 1 April. Six Land Bank properties close 1 April, two more switch, and twelve go from immediate control to leashed.
Fanshell-style precision is not on offer here. Closures are posted when the birds arrive, not on a published timetable, so April is the month where checking the week you travel matters most.
6. December
Full access, short days.
Every seasonal restriction is off. Wasque, Cape Poge, the Land Bank beaches, all open.
The constraint is daylight and services. Sunset is early, the Chappy Ferry is on winter hours to 10 pm plus a late run, the Island Queen is not running, and a good number of island businesses are shut.
Good for a walking holiday, poor for a town holiday.
7. March
Open until it is not.
Access is full for most of the month. Then plovers return in late March or April and the notices start.
The weather is the worst argument against it. Raw, wet, and windy, with none of January's clarity.
Its one advantage over January and February is that more of the island is coming back to life.
8. June
The first genuinely difficult month.
Peak nesting protection is in force. All the April closures hold. Cape Poge adds occasional over-sand vehicle closures in June and July to protect rare nesting shorebirds.
Crowds are building and the ferry queues with them.
But the light is extraordinary and the Land Bank's annual Cross-Island Hike falls on National Trails Day in early June, a 20.9-mile route from Eastville Point to Wasque Point that tells you how much walkable trail this island actually has.
Use the trails, forget the sand.
9. February
Total access to an island where almost nothing is open.
Every dog restriction is lifted. You will have Wasque to yourself.
And that is most of what February offers. Restaurants and shops largely closed, ferry service reduced, weather unkind.
For a certain kind of trip this is perfect. A cottage, a fire, a dog, and four miles of empty beach a day. For any other kind of trip it is not.
10. January
February with worse weather.
Same full access, same closures of everything else, plus the coldest and roughest conditions of the year. Cheapest month by a distance.
The ferry is the thing to watch. Winter storms cancel crossings, and being stuck on the wrong side of the water with a dog is a real scenario rather than a theoretical one.
11. July
Maximum restriction meets maximum crowd.
Everything that closes is closed. State Beach, Wasque's sand, the great-pond beaches, and Cape Poge's vehicle access on and off through June and July.
The Chappy Ferry gets very busy, to the point where a deckhand walks off the boat to collect fares and load passengers efficiently.
It is still doable. The 25 year-round immediate-control Land Bank properties do not change in July, Chappy Point Beach permits immediate control every month of the year, and Wasque's upland trails stay open on a lead.
You are just working around the island rather than with it.
12. August
July, plus heat, plus the last nests still fledging.
The latest plover nests are laid in early August, and with a month to hatching and four to five weeks of brooding and fledging, those are the birds that keep September restricted.
Every closure holds through the month.
And the practical problems compound. Ferry queues at their longest, no cash-only surprises forgiven, hot vehicle decks, and beaches that are either shut to dogs or packed with people.
If August is your only option, plan a trail-and-town trip with Chappy Point Beach as the water, and cross early or late.
The three dates that actually matter
1 April. The switch. Almost every seasonal restriction on the island begins here, and the ones that do not begin in May.
30 September. The release. Wasque reopens 1 October, Cape Poge's leash window opens, and the Land Bank's bans lift.
Mid-October, the Saturday the MV Derby ends. The Chappy Ferry drops to winter hours the following day, and the island's practical services step down with it.
What never changes
Long Point Wildlife Refuge bans dogs every day of the year. No month improves it. Detail in the Trustees properties and the rule at each.
Chappy Point Beach permits immediate control every day of the year, which makes it the one reliable water access in any month. See Chappaquiddick with a dog.
Roughly 25 Land Bank properties never change their rule. Immediate control, January to December. That is the backbone of a summer trip. See the Land Bank's seven dog policies.
All five ferries carry dogs free, all year. See every dog on Martha's Vineyard arrives by boat.
And four separate authorities set beach rules in every month. See the four authorities that set beach dog rules, and the biology behind all of it in the plover closures.
