Myrtle Beach With a Dog, Month by Month: All 12 Ranked, and Why the Day After Labor Day Changes Everything

Ranked on access rather than weather, because on the Grand Strand the access changes on published dates. October wins, July comes last, and the first half of May hides an advantage almost nobody uses.

Most month-by-month travel guides rank on weather. This one ranks on access, because on the Grand Strand access is the thing that actually varies, and it varies on published dates you can look up.

Here is the whole calendar in one sentence. From the day after Labor Day to 30 April, dogs can be on Myrtle Beach sand at any hour of the day. From 1 May to Labor Day, they cannot be there between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. Two more dates modify that, 15 May in North Myrtle Beach and Memorial Day for beach shade, and one thing never changes at all.

That gives you a ranking that is not a matter of taste.

All twelve, ranked by access

Rank Month Why
1 October Full-day beach access, warm water, thin crowds
2 April Full-day access right up to the 30th, spring warmth
3 September Restrictions lift the day after Labor Day, early in the month
4 May Half the month is unrestricted somewhere on the strand
5 November Full-day access, cooler, quiet
6 March Full-day access, unpredictable warmth
7 December Full-day access, short days
8 February Full-day access, coldest water
9 January Full-day access, coldest air
10 June Midday closed, shade rules at their tightest
11 August Midday closed, hottest sand
12 July Midday closed, peak crowds, peak heat

The bottom three are not bad months to visit. They are the months where you have to work around a timetable. The top nine are months where there is no timetable to work around.

The dates that drive the ranking

Everything below comes from a municipality's own published rules.

1 May. Myrtle Beach and Surfside Beach close the sand to dogs between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. Myrtle Beach's rule is ordinance section 5-13: "Animals are not allowed on the beach between the hours of 10:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m., from May 1 up to and including Labor Day." Surfside's own page says the same in its own words.

1 May. The Myrtle Beach Oceanfront Boardwalk narrows to dogs "only between 5:00 a.m. and 10:00 a.m."

15 May. North Myrtle Beach starts its restriction, per the city's beach laws: "May 15 to Labor Day: No dogs allowed on the beach 10 am to 4 pm." Note the earlier close, 4 p.m. rather than 5 p.m.

15 May. North Myrtle Beach also bans tents, cabanas, pavilions, tarps and sports-brellas from the beach, per its beach ordinances.

Memorial Day. Myrtle Beach's shade rule tightens. Ordinance section 5-4: "Shading devices, other than circular umbrellas with a diameter of seven and one-half feet or less, shall not be allowed on the beach between Memorial Day through Labor Day."

Labor Day. All three towns' time restrictions end, on the day itself in Myrtle Beach's wording, "up to and including Labor Day."

The day after Labor Day. Everything opens. Dogs on the beach at any time of day, dogs on the boardwalk at any time of day, and the shade rules relax.

30 April. The last unrestricted day.

1. October

The best month, and not close. Full-day beach access on every municipality's sand, water still holding summer warmth, air that no longer punishes a dark-coated dog at noon, and a fraction of the summer crowd.

The boardwalk is open to dogs at any hour. You can put a pop-up shade up if you want one, though in October you may not need it. Nothing on the beach closes at ten in the morning.

What to still get right: the emergency hospital gap, which is the one thing October does not fix. More on that below.

2. April

Nearly as good, from the other side of summer. Everything is unrestricted through 30 April, so the whole month is open. Spring warmth on the Carolina coast can be generous, and the water is coming up rather than going down.

One planning note. If your trip straddles the end of April into May, the rules change under you mid-visit. A dog that had the whole beach on 30 April loses the middle of the day on 1 May.

3. September

The restrictions lift within the first week or so, depending on where Labor Day falls. Book the second half of September and you have effectively an October trip with warmer water.

The first days of the month still carry the summer timetable, so check the calendar for the exact date rather than assuming the 1st.

4. May

A genuinely odd month, and useful if you know the trick. Between 1 and 14 May, Myrtle Beach and Surfside are restricted from 10 to 5 while North Myrtle Beach is not restricted at all, because its season does not start until 15 May.

So in the first fortnight of May there is a town on this coast where your dog can lie on the sand at noon. That is a real planning advantage and almost nobody knows it.

From 15 May the whole strand is on a timetable, and Memorial Day tightens the shade rules on top.

5. November

Full-day access, quiet beaches, cool water. A good month for a dog that overheats easily and a poor one for a dog that lives to swim. Days are getting short, which compresses your walking window at both ends.

Our cold weather pet safety guide covers the wind-chill side of a coastal winter walk, which matters more here than the thermometer suggests.

6. March

Unrestricted, and a gamble on warmth. March on this coast can deliver a beach day or a cold grey wind off the water. Access is not the constraint, so the whole question is what the weather does.

7. December

Open all day, and the shortest days of the year. Between the late sunrise and the early sunset you have less usable daylight than in any other month, which is the only reason it sits below March.

8 and 9. February and January

Both fully unrestricted, both cold. Coldest water in February, coldest air in January, in the general pattern of a mid-Atlantic coast. Access is total. Comfort is not.

These are good months for a long, empty, unhurried beach walk with a dog who does not mind weather, and they are the cheapest months to stay.

10. June

The first full month of the summer timetable, and the tightest one for shade. Both the Myrtle Beach and North Myrtle Beach restrictions are in force for the whole month, and Memorial Day has already narrowed Myrtle Beach shade to a circular umbrella of 7.5 feet or less.

That combination is worth sitting with. In June, July and August the only shade you may legally carry onto a Myrtle Beach beach is a small circular umbrella, in the months a dog needs shade most. North Myrtle Beach is slightly more generous, permitting a circular shade up to 9 feet in diameter with a centre pole no greater than 7 feet 6 inches, and it bans tents outright.

So an umbrella that is legal in North Myrtle Beach may be too wide for Myrtle Beach. Check the diameter on the label before you buy.

11. August

Hottest sand of the year, and the timetable in full force. The dog gets the beach before 10 a.m. and after 5 p.m. in Myrtle Beach and Surfside, or after 4 p.m. in North Myrtle Beach.

Do the surface test even inside the legal hours. At 5:30 p.m. in August the sand and the car park have had all day to absorb heat. Our summer heat safety for pets guide covers the back-of-the-hand check, which takes five seconds and prevents the most common avoidable injury of a beach trip.

12. July

Peak everything. Peak heat, peak crowd, full timetable, tightest shade rules. It is entirely doable with a dog, and it is the month that demands the most planning.

The July plan that works: a beach walk starting no later than 8 a.m., the boardwalk between 5 and 10 a.m. if you want it, the middle of the day indoors or on a shaded patio, and a second beach session from 5 p.m.

The one thing that never changes

The Grand Strand's emergency animal hospital is closed during the weekday working day, all year. Animal Emergency Hospital of the Strand publishes hours of 6 p.m. to 8 a.m. Monday to Thursday, 6 p.m. Friday through 8 a.m. Monday, 24 hours at weekends, and 24 hours on all major holidays.

So the uncovered window is roughly 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday to Friday, in every one of the twelve months. October does not fix it and neither does January.

Save two numbers. (843) 445-9797 for the hospital, and a weekday practice such as Veterinary Clinic of Myrtle Beach on (843) 444-1234, which publishes hours of 8:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday to Friday. Our emergency vet guide covers what to have ready before you dial.

Also year round: the 7-foot maximum leash in both Myrtle Beach and North Myrtle Beach, the ban on glass on the beach, the ban on fires and propane grills, the 75-yard exclusion around every pier, and the rule that nothing may be left on the beach between 7 p.m. and 8 a.m.

Where to stay

October and April are the months to be picky about location, because you have the whole day and can walk from wherever you are.

July and August are the months to be picky about proximity, because your beach windows are early morning and evening, and a long drive eats both.

The board's pet-friendly directory holds 75 listings, though it does not attach a policy to each individual property, so confirm directly. The PetCompass hotel directory covers the region, and our questions to ask before booking a pet-friendly hotel list is worth running through before you commit to a summer booking.

Conclusion

Come in October. If not October, April. If not either, the second half of September.

If you must come in July, the beach is still yours before 10 a.m. and after 5 p.m., the boardwalk is yours from 5 to 10 a.m., your shade has to be a small circular umbrella, and you should save the emergency numbers before you unpack.

And whatever month you pick, the day after Labor Day to 30 April is the part of the year this coast quietly hands over to people with dogs.

Frequently asked questions

October. Dogs have full-day beach access from the day after Labor Day through 30 April, October still has warm water and warm air, and the summer crowds have gone.

What is the worst month to visit Myrtle Beach with a dog?

July. The 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. beach restriction is in force, the shade rules are at their tightest, and the sand and pavement are at their hottest. It is workable with early morning and evening beach sessions.

When do the Myrtle Beach dog beach restrictions start and end?

From 1 May up to and including Labor Day, dogs are not allowed on the beach between 10:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. From the day after Labor Day to 30 April there is no time restriction.
