Del Mar Dog Beach: 3 Zones, 2 Seasons, and 1 Stretch That Bars Dogs Completely

Del Mar has the most precisely drawn dog beach rules in Southern California, and people get them wrong because the town publishes a map rather than a sentence. Three zones, two seasons, and one stretch that allows no dogs at all in summer.

Del Mar has the most precisely drawn dog beach rules in Southern California, and the reason people get them wrong is that the town publishes them as a map rather than a sentence.

Three named zones. Two seasons. And in peak season, one of those zones allows no dogs at all. Not leashed dogs, not restricted-hours dogs. None.

If you have read that Del Mar's Main Beach allows leashed dogs in summer, that is the version circulating online and it is not what the city publishes. We checked the city's own regulations sheet and it says otherwise.

Here is the whole thing, quoted from the source.

The two seasons

Everything turns on these dates, verbatim from the City of Del Mar's dog friendly beach regulations:

"Peak Season: June 16th - Labor Day"

"Off Season: Day after Labor Day to June 15th"

So the off season is nine months long. That is the thing to take away before anything else. For three quarters of the year Del Mar is a considerably more generous dog town than in summer.

The three zones, and the tot lot

Zone Boundaries Peak season Off season
North Beach 29th St to the Solana Beach border Off leash dawn to 8 a.m., leashed at all other times Off leash, no time limit
Main Beach North boundary of Powerhouse Park to 29th St No dogs allowed Leashed, plus off leash 25th to 29th streets dawn to 8 a.m.
South Beach Powerhouse Park to Torrey Pines State Beach at 6th St Leashed Leashed
South Powerhouse Park and Tot Lot Inside Powerhouse Park No dogs allowed No dogs allowed

Every cell above is the city's own wording, condensed only in the table. The full quotations follow.

North Beach: the good one

Off season, verbatim: "Off-leash dogs allowed."

That is the entire rule. No time window, no leash condition, no seasonal caveat beyond the season itself. From the day after Labor Day to 15 June, North Beach is a fully off-leash beach.

Peak season, verbatim: "Off-leash dogs permitted from dawn to 8 am. Dogs shall be leashed at all other times."

So even in summer you get an off-leash window, and it is the coolest, quietest part of the day, which is when you would want it anyway.

North Beach runs from 29th Street north to the Solana Beach border, which makes the northern end of town the place to base yourself if off-leash time is the point of the trip.

The comparison worth making. Nine months of unrestricted off-leash beach is better than almost anything on the Atlantic coast. Charleston's Isle of Palms gives dogs an eighteen-hour daily window in winter, which is generous. Del Mar's off season gives them the whole day.

Main Beach: the one people get wrong

Peak season, verbatim: "No Dogs allowed".

Three words, and they are the reason this article exists. Between 16 June and Labor Day, Main Beach is closed to dogs. There is no leashed option and no early window.

Off season, verbatim: "Leashed dogs allowed. Off-leash dogs allowed between 25th and 29th streets from dawn to 8 am."

So off season, Main Beach gives you two things: leashed access along its length, and a small off-leash pocket between 25th and 29th streets at dawn.

That pocket is worth knowing about because it sits immediately south of North Beach, which is fully off leash in the same season. In practice the off-leash ground runs continuously from 25th Street north to the Solana Beach border in the early morning during the off season.

Main Beach runs from the north boundary of Powerhouse Park to 29th Street, which is the central, most-visited stretch of Del Mar shoreline. That is precisely why it closes in summer.

South Beach: simple

Both seasons, verbatim: "Dogs must be leashed."

South Beach runs from Powerhouse Park south to the Torrey Pines State Beach boundary at 6th Street. Leashed, year round, no exceptions and no windows.

Which makes it the reliable choice if you want a beach walk without checking a calendar. Same rule in January as in July.

One boundary note. South Beach ends where Torrey Pines State Beach begins. Look for posted signs at the boundary.

South Powerhouse Park and the Tot Lot: never

Both seasons, verbatim: "No Dogs allowed".

This is the one closure that does not move with the season. A children's play area and the southern part of Powerhouse Park are closed to dogs every day of the year.

Worth knowing because Powerhouse Park is the obvious place to park and regroup, and it sits directly between Main Beach and South Beach. The park is where a lot of people naturally pause, and part of it is not available to you.

The correction, stated plainly

We are flagging this because it matters for trust.

The city's own regulations sheet says "No Dogs allowed."

That is not a small difference. One version has you walking a leashed dog along the main beach in July; the other has you committing a violation.

Reading the primary source turned a permission into a prohibition. It is the whole argument for going to the city's own document.

How Del Mar fits the wider region

Del Mar is one of three coastal jurisdictions with different systems, and knowing all three turns a rigid trip into a flexible one.

The City of San Diego runs a clock on its beaches: from its beach dog page, dogs are barred 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. from 1 April to 31 October, and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. from 31 October to 31 March, leashed outside those hours.

Except at Dog Beach, foot of Voltaire Street in Ocean Beach, which the city's leash-free list shows as off leash and open 24 hours, all year.

Coronado allows off leash only at its designated Dog Beach, 200 Ocean Boulevard, per the city's dogs page, with leashes required "at all points before the dog beach area."

So in peak season, when Del Mar's Main Beach is shut to dogs, Dog Beach in Ocean Beach is a forty-minute drive south and open around the clock. That is the fallback worth knowing.

Our beaches and national parks with dogs guide covers planning across a boundary like this.

A Del Mar dog day that works

Off season, any time of day: North Beach, off leash, no window to hit.

Off season, at dawn: North Beach plus the 25th to 29th Street pocket of Main Beach, which gives you a long continuous off-leash run.

Peak season, before 8 a.m.: North Beach off leash. Set an alarm; this is the only off-leash window in town all summer.

Peak season, after 8 a.m.: North Beach leashed, or South Beach leashed. Main Beach is not an option.

Any season, with children in tow: remember the Tot Lot and South Powerhouse Park are closed to dogs, so plan who holds the lead.

Bring: fresh water and a bowl, because a dog that swims in the Pacific drinks it. Bags. A towel. A six-foot lead, held. And do the back-of-the-hand surface test before a midday walk, since our summer heat safety for pets guide covers why sand temperature matters more than air temperature.

If something goes wrong

North county has its own 24-hour cover, which matters because Del Mar is a long way from the Mission Valley hospitals.

From the San Diego Humane Society's directory:

  • Veterinary Specialty Hospital North County, 2055 Montiel Rd Unit 104, San Marcos 92069, 760-466-0600, 24 hours
  • Veterinary Emergency Group Oceanside, 2224 S El Camino Real, Oceanside 92054, 760-621-0711, 24 hours

The society's own disclaimer travels with the list: those businesses "were gathered as a courtesy for the community and are not endorsed or guaranteed by San Diego Humane Society."

Encinitas is the closest of the three to Del Mar. Look up the drive on the day you arrive. Our emergency vet guide covers what to have ready before you dial.

Where to stay

North Del Mar or Solana Beach puts you next to North Beach, which is the only zone with off-leash access in both seasons. That is the choice if off-leash time is why you came.

Central Del Mar is convenient for the town and the wrong end for dogs in summer, since Main Beach is closed to them from 16 June to Labor Day.

Our pet-friendly hotels in San Diego page covers the region, the San Diego hotel directory covers the wider area, and our questions to ask before booking a pet-friendly hotel list is the call to make, including asking which beach zone the property actually backs onto.

Conclusion

Nine months of the year, Del Mar's North Beach is a fully off-leash beach with no time limit, which is about as good as American shoreline gets. Three months of the year, from 16 June to Labor Day, it narrows to dawn until 8 a.m., and Main Beach closes to dogs entirely.

South Beach is leashed all year and never changes. South Powerhouse Park and the Tot Lot are closed to dogs every day.

Check the calendar before you check the map, base yourself at the north end, and if you are here in July, set an alarm for dawn.
