Emergency Vets in Scottsdale: Two Lists That Disagree
Same buildings, different practice names, and in two cases different phone numbers. Which Scottsdale list to trust at 2 a.m., and the two 24-hour hospitals that share a ZIP code.
Scottsdale, Arizona9 min readPet Care & Services
Scottsdale is well covered for after-hours veterinary care, and it has an unusual problem: the city and the county both publish emergency clinic lists, and they name three of the same hospitals differently.
Same buildings, same street addresses, different practice names, and in two cases different phone numbers. If you call the number on the older list, you may reach a phone tree for a practice that has been rebranded.
Here is what each source says, which one to trust, and the two hospitals that share a ZIP code.
Start here: the 24-hour hospitals with Scottsdale addresses
From Maricopa County's own 24-hour emergency directory, the entries carrying Scottsdale addresses:
| Hospital | Phone | Address |
|---|---|---|
| BluePearl, Scottsdale | 480-949-8001 | 22595 N. Scottsdale Road, Ste 110, Scottsdale, AZ 85255 |
| The Scottsdale Veterinary Clinic | 480-945-8484 | 7311 E. Thomas Road, Suite 100, Scottsdale, AZ 85251 |
| Thrive Pet Healthcare Specialist North Scottsdale | 480-690-3738 | 17477 N 82nd St., Scottsdale, AZ 85255 |
| VCA McCormick Ranch Animal Hospital and Emergency Center | 480-948-3873 | 10380 N Hayden Road, Scottsdale, AZ 85258 |
And one the county files under Phoenix that is physically in Scottsdale, which is worth knowing if you are searching by city name.
MedVet, listed as Phoenix. Verbatim from its own page: "ER Open 24/7", address "10450 N. 74th St." and "Scottsdale, AZ 85258", phone "623.522.8904".
Also verbatim from MedVet: "MedVet Phoenix is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year, providing exceptional emergency veterinary care for pets in the Greater Phoenix area." And, usefully: "If your pet needs emergency care, you can come directly to our hospital. No appointment is ever needed for emergency care, and our skilled team is available every hour of every day."
Two of these share ZIP 85258: VCA McCormick Ranch on N Hayden Road and MedVet on N 74th Street. If you live in that part of Scottsdale you have two 24-hour options inside a few minutes of each other.
The one hospital we verified at its own front door
We could read VCA McCormick Ranch's own page, and it confirms the county rather than the city.
Read at vcahospitals.com, it self-identifies as "VCA McCormick Ranch Animal Hospital and Emergency Center" at "10380 N Hayden Road", "Scottsdale, AZ 85258", gives "480-948-3873", and lists "Open 24 Hours" for every day of the week.
That matters because the city's list gives a different name and a different number for the same address. More on that below.
The two lists, side by side
Scottsdale publishes its own nearest-veterinarian-clinics PDF, keyed to McDowell Sonoran Preserve trailheads, with an emergency page at the back. Three of the four emergency entries appear in the county directory at the same address under a different name.
| Address | City of Scottsdale PDF | Maricopa County directory |
|---|---|---|
| 22595 N. Scottsdale Road, Ste 110 | "Emergency Animal Clinic", 480-949-8001 | BluePearl, Scottsdale, 480-949-8001 |
| 10380 N Hayden Road | "VCA Paradise Valley Animal Hospital", 602-551-8341 | VCA McCormick Ranch Animal Hospital and Emergency Center, 480-948-3873 |
| 17477 N 82nd St. | "Animal Medical and Surgical Center", 480-462-5921 | Thrive Pet Healthcare Specialist North Scottsdale, 480-690-3738 |
The phone number matches on the first row and differs on the other two.
Our reading, stated as a reading: these look like practices that have been acquired and rebranded, with the city's PDF not yet updated. The VCA page settles the second row in the county's favour. We could not settle the third.
Practical instruction: use the county's names and numbers, or the hospital's own page where you can read it. Treat the city PDF as the source for one thing only, which is the anti-venom flags below.
How to read the county directory, because it covers the whole metro area
The county's list is not a Scottsdale list. It is a Maricopa County list of roughly twenty 24-hour hospitals across the metro area, and the Scottsdale entries above are the subset carrying Scottsdale addresses.
Two consequences for anyone in Scottsdale.
Your nearest 24-hour hospital may not be in Scottsdale. If you live in south Scottsdale near the 202, hospitals in Phoenix, Mesa or Tempe on the same list may be closer than the north Scottsdale ones. Drive time is the only metric that matters at 2 a.m., so measure it rather than assuming the city boundary means anything.
And the headings on that list are not reliable geography. We found this in the Phoenix batch too: the county's MedVet entry is headed Phoenix and carries a Scottsdale address, its BluePearl "Peoria" entry carries a Glendale address, and its AVECCC "Buckeye" entry carries a Litchfield Park address. Trust the address, not the heading.
The county attaches a plain disclaimer to the whole thing, and it is worth reading before you treat the list as a recommendation. It states that the resources are provided in the spirit of helpfulness rather than as endorsements, that the organisations do not provide the county with updated information, and that you should contact each resource directly to determine whether it can meet your needs. Our emergency vets in Phoenix guide quotes it in full and covers the metro-wide picture.
"Do not provide MCACC with updated information" is the sentence that explains this whole article. Neither published list is maintained by the hospitals on it.
The thing only the city publishes: anti-venom by clinic
This is genuinely valuable and nobody else in this metro area does it. Scottsdale's PDF states whether each clinic holds rattlesnake anti-venom on site.
All four clinics on its emergency page carry the note "Anti-venom on site for rattlesnake bites". The day clinics are mixed:
| Clinic | Phone | Anti-venom, as the city states it |
|---|---|---|
| Dynamite Animal Hospital | 480-538-0900 | "Anti-venom on site for rattlesnake bites." |
| Pima North Animal Hospital | 480-563-5432 | "Anti-venom on site for rattlesnake bites." |
| McDowell Mountain Animal Hospital | 480-419-6300 | "NO anti-venom" |
| Animal Clinic Del Rancho | 480-405-5485 | "Anti-venom on site for rattlesnake bites" |
| KC Animal Hospital | 480-451-8375 | "NO anti-venom" |
Two of the five day clinics say they hold none. If you are hiking in snake season, that is the difference between the nearest clinic and the right clinic. Our rattlesnake bites and dogs in Scottsdale guide has the full list with addresses and the trailhead each group sits nearest to.
The city attaches its own disclaimer, verbatim: "These clinics are not endorsed by Scottsdale; this is provided as an informational reference." And on the selection, verbatim: "The criteria for this list consists of the nearest veterinarian clinics to Scottsdale's McDowell Sonoran Preserve Trailheads."
So it is a proximity list, not a quality list. Read it that way.
What to do tonight, before you need any of this
Four things, and they take about fifteen minutes.
Pick your hospital by drive time and write the address down. Not the name, the address, because the names on these lists move. Two 24-hour hospitals sit in ZIP 85258, and if you are north of the 101 the Scottsdale Road and 82nd Street options are closer.
Ring the number and confirm it is answered by the practice you expect. Two of the three conflicting entries have different phone numbers on the two lists, and a wrong number at 2 a.m. costs you the one thing you cannot spare.
Drive the route once in daylight. Our emergency vet, what to know guide covers what to expect on arrival, including what they will ask you for.
Fill in an emergency card and put it on the fridge. Our emergency pet info card and pet emergency preparedness checklist templates are built for this, and a pet sitter will need them more than you will.
And register with a day-to-day practice while your dog is well. Becoming a new client during an emergency is the most expensive way to do it. Our how to choose a veterinarian guide covers what to ask.
The two emergencies this city actually generates
Worth knowing which way your local risk runs, because it changes what you should have in the car.
Heat. Scottsdale's Preserve pages tell dog owners that over 90 degrees at any point in the hike is too hot for the dog, and that the desert heat "can kill them with little or no warning". Our dogs in the McDowell Sonoran Preserve guide covers the thresholds and a first aid conflict between the city and the county worth reading before you need it.
Snakes. The city's rattlesnake page puts the active season at 60 to 90 degrees, which is exactly the window in which it is cool enough to bring a dog.
For everything else, our pet first aid basics and toxic foods and plants for pets guides cover the common presentations.
If your dog is missing rather than injured
Different problem, different number. Maricopa County Animal Care and Control runs the shelter, and a licensed dog gets a longer hold than an unlicensed one. Our lost dog in Scottsdale guide covers the timeline, and our Maricopa County dog licence guide covers why the tag is worth $22.
And if your dog has bitten someone or been bitten, that is a third route again. Scottsdale's dog park rules give the county number, 602-506-7387, and our dog bites and attacks in Scottsdale guide covers what follows.
Frequently asked questions
Which emergency vets in Scottsdale are open 24 hours? Maricopa County's directory lists BluePearl Scottsdale, The Scottsdale Veterinary Clinic, Thrive Pet Healthcare Specialist North Scottsdale and VCA McCormick Ranch Animal Hospital and Emergency Center with Scottsdale addresses. MedVet, which the county files under Phoenix, is physically in Scottsdale and states that its ER is open 24/7.
Why do the city and county lists give different names? Three of the four emergency clinics on Scottsdale's PDF appear at the same addresses under different names in the county directory, and in two cases with different phone numbers. Our reading is that the practices were rebranded and the city PDF is out of date.
Which list should I trust? The county directory, or the hospital's own page where it is readable. VCA's own page confirms the county's name and number for the Hayden Road hospital. Use the city PDF for its anti-venom flags.
Which Scottsdale clinics hold rattlesnake anti-venom? Scottsdale's PDF flags Dynamite Animal Hospital, Pima North Animal Hospital and Animal Clinic Del Rancho as holding anti-venom on site, and states "NO anti-venom" for McDowell Mountain Animal Hospital and KC Animal Hospital. All four clinics on its emergency page are flagged as holding it.
Is there a 24-hour vet near McCormick Ranch? Yes. VCA McCormick Ranch Animal Hospital and Emergency Center at 10380 N Hayden Road, Scottsdale, AZ 85258 lists Open 24 Hours for every day of the week on its own page, with the number 480-948-3873.
Is MedVet Phoenix actually in Phoenix? No. Its own page gives the address as 10450 N. 74th St., Scottsdale, AZ 85258, while the hospital is named for Phoenix.
