14 Best Dog-Friendly Restaurants and Patios in St. Augustine, FL
Fourteen St. Augustine patios that welcome dogs, grouped by neighbourhood with addresses and phone numbers, and the pavement-heat rule that decides when you should eat.
St. Augustine, Florida10 min readEat & Drink
The historic district is where St. Augustine gets difficult with a dog. St. George Street is narrow, pedestrianised, and packed from late morning onward, the buildings are centuries old with no setback, and most of the shops will not take a dog through the door. By hour two you are hot, your dog is hotter, and the pavement is radiating heat back up at them.
The fix is knowing which fourteen places will seat you, and where they are. All fourteen below appear on the county tourism board's own pet-friendly dining list, which is the most reliable single source in this city because the operators opted in rather than a blogger guessing. We have grouped them by neighbourhood so you can plan a route rather than wander, and included the address and phone for each, because calling ahead is worth ninety seconds in peak season.
One note that shapes everything here. Florida heat means the patio is not always the kind option. Nine of these sit in the historic district on pavement that holds heat well past sunset, so timing matters more than it does in a mountain town. Eat early or eat late.
The rule in St. Augustine
Dogs go on the patio. Health codes generally keep animals out of indoor areas where food is prepared and served, and St. Augustine is no exception, so every venue below is an outdoor-seating arrangement rather than an indoor welcome.
What St. Augustine gives you instead of indoor access is water. Four of these sit directly on Matanzas Bay or the Intracoastal, and a table with moving air off the water is worth more to a dog in July than an air-conditioned dining room they are not allowed into anyway.
Historic district, on the water
Meehan's Irish Pub and Seafood House, 20 Avenida Menendez, (904) 810-1923. Directly across from the bayfront and the Castillo, with a patio that catches the breeze off Matanzas Bay. Irish pub food and seafood, and the most convenient sit-down stop if you have just walked the fort grounds with your dog.
Harry's Seafood Bar and Grille, 46 Avenida Menendez, (904) 824-7765. New Orleans style seafood in a courtyard setting, and one of the busiest patios in the city. The courtyard is shaded, which puts it ahead of most of the bayfront strip in the middle of the day. Expect a wait at peak.
O.C. White's Seafood and Spirits, 118 Avenida Menendez, (904) 824-0808. A large outdoor courtyard in a historic house near the Bridge of Lions, with live music most evenings. The courtyard has room to tuck a dog out of the walkway, which is more than several of the narrower patios can offer.
Historic district, inland
Columbia Restaurant, 98 St. George Street, (904) 824-3341. The Spanish landmark, with a courtyard patio off St. George Street. This is the one to book if you want a proper dinner rather than a quick stop, and the courtyard puts you a step back from the pedestrian crush outside.
Taberna del Caballo, 37 St. George Street, (904) 342-2867. A Spanish colonial tavern in the Colonial Quarter with an outdoor courtyard. Tapas and sangria, and the setting is genuinely of the period rather than decorated to look it.
Bull and Crown Publick House, 53 St. George Street, (904) 342-2857. British colonial pub in the same Colonial Quarter, a few doors along from Taberna del Caballo. Between the two you can move a dog from one courtyard to another without crossing the busiest part of the street twice.
The Floridian, 485 Old Beach Road, (904) 829-0655. Southern food built on local produce, and the most food-forward kitchen on this list. Sits slightly outside the tourist core, which means a calmer patio and a table you can actually get.
St. Augustine Fish Camp, 142 Riberia Street, (904) 827-7000. On the San Sebastian River in the quieter western half of the old town. Seafood, water views, and considerably fewer people than anywhere on St. George Street.
Raintree Restaurant, 102 San Marco Avenue, (904) 824-7211. A Victorian house north of the historic core with a garden setting. Good option for an evening meal when you want space around the table rather than a narrow strip of pavement.
Vilano Beach
The Reef Restaurant, 4100 Coastal Highway, (904) 824-8008. Oceanfront, with a deck looking straight out at the Atlantic. This is the best pairing on the whole list: walk Vilano Beach with your dog on leash, then sit down twenty yards from where you were walking.
Aunt Kate's on the River, 612 Euclid Avenue, (904) 829-1105. On the Tolomato River with a large outdoor deck and dock. Sunset here is the reason to make the short drive over the Usina Bridge, and the deck has room for a dog to lie down properly.
St. Augustine Beach
Salt Life Food Shack, 321 A1A Beach Boulevard, (904) 217-3256. Casual seafood and a rooftop deck a short walk from the St. Augustine Beach pier. The obvious lunch stop on a beach day, and casual enough that a sandy dog is not a problem.
Just outside the core
Kingfish Grill, 504 West Geoffery Street, 904-824-2111, spelled as the restaurant spells it on its own contact page. On the Intracoastal at Camachee Cove marina, north of the historic district. Waterfront deck, marina views, and the calmest patio on this list by some distance.
Marina Munch Waterside Food Truck Park. We could not confirm this one: its website did not resolve on any address we tried, so the street address and phone number that circulate for it are unverified here. Call ahead or check locally before you plan around it. A food truck park rather than a restaurant, which makes it the most relaxed option in the city with a dog. Open-air by design, several kitchens to choose from, and nobody minds a dog under the picnic table.

Eating routes that work
Bayfront walk. Meehan's, Harry's, and O.C. White's sit within a few minutes of each other along Avenida Menendez, all facing the water, all a short walk from the Castillo grounds where dogs are welcome outside the fort. Do the fort grounds first, then eat.
Colonial Quarter pair. Taberna del Caballo and Bull and Crown are doors apart on St. George Street. Useful when the first has a wait, which in season it will.
Beach day. Vilano Beach then The Reef or Aunt Kate's. St. Augustine Beach then Salt Life Food Shack. Both pairings keep the driving to nothing, which matters when the car has been sitting in the sun. dog-friendly beaches guide covers which stretches allow dogs, including the one famous beach that does not.
Quiet option. Kingfish Grill or St. Augustine Fish Camp, both away from the crowds, both on water. This is the route for a reactive dog or a dog who has already had enough of St. George Street.
Practical notes for a dog on a patio here
Pavement heat is the real constraint. The historic district is stone and brick throughout and it holds heat long after the air cools. Test the ground with the back of your hand for seven seconds before you commit to a walking route. Eat before 11am or after 6pm in summer.
Ask for a corner or a rail seat. Several of these patios are narrow strips between a historic building and a busy pedestrian street. An interior corner keeps your dog out of the path of servers and passing crowds.
Bring your own water bowl. Many of these places will bring one, but shared patio bowls run dry at peak and a dog who has just walked the old town in Florida heat should not be waiting.
Book or call ahead in season. St. Augustine's compact centre fills fast, and a patio table with room for a dog is a narrower category than a table for two.
For the rest of the trip, pet-friendly tours and attractions covers the unusually long list of places here that admit dogs, including a ghost tour and a sailing schooner, and the month-by-month ranking of all 12 months itinerary works several of these tables into a plan. If you have not booked, compare pet-friendly hotels in St. Augustine.
Conclusion
Fourteen patios, nine of them in the historic district and four of them on the water, all listed by the county tourism board as pet friendly. That is a strong showing for a city this old and this compact.
The winning move is not choosing the best restaurant, it is choosing the right time. Pavement temperature decides whether a dog enjoys the historic district or endures it. Confirm policies directly before you go, because patio rules and seasons change. Then go find the table your pet will wag "yes" to.
Frequently asked questions
Can dogs go inside restaurants in St. Augustine? Generally no. Health codes keep animals out of indoor areas where food is prepared and served, so all fourteen venues here are patio, courtyard, or deck arrangements. What the city offers instead is waterfront seating, with four of these directly on the bay, river, or ocean.
Which St. Augustine restaurant is best with a dog? The Reef at Vilano Beach if you want to combine lunch with a beach walk, Marina Munch food truck park if you want the most relaxed setting in the city, and O.C. White's if you want a historic-district courtyard with genuine room to tuck a dog out of the walkway.
Are there dog-friendly restaurants near Castillo de San Marcos? Yes. Meehan's at 20 Avenida Menendez, Harry's at 46 Avenida Menendez, and O.C. White's at 118 Avenida Menendez are all on the bayfront within a short walk of the fort grounds, where leashed dogs are welcome outside the fort building.
Do any of these have breed or weight restrictions? None of the fourteen publishes a breed or weight restriction. The universal expectation is a leashed, well-behaved dog. In St. Augustine, size limits show up at attractions rather than restaurants, most notably at San Sebastian Winery, which permits small dogs only.
What is the best time to eat out with a dog in St. Augustine? Before 11am or after 6pm in summer. The historic district is stone and brick throughout and radiates heat long after the air has cooled, so midday is hard on paws regardless of how comfortable the shade feels to you.
Where can I eat with a dog away from the crowds? Kingfish Grill at Camachee Cove marina and St. Augustine Fish Camp on the San Sebastian River are the two calmest options, both on water and both well clear of St. George Street. Raintree Restaurant's garden setting north of the historic core is a third.
